An insane man caught on video camera punching a Muslim woman who was covering her head with a hijab at Michigan hospital possibly punched her because of her faith, according to the woman’s lawyer.
John Deliz, 57, silently went behind the 19-year-old women and started punching her multiple times, knocked her to the ground, while she was at the reception desk in Beaumont Hospital in Dearborn, video shows.
This who incident took place on Feb. 10. The woman who was attacked has recently filed a suit in which she has claimed $25k in damages from the hospital.
“Certainly, after watching the video, and hearing my client’s version of events, the circumstantial evidence would lead one to conclude that the attack was religiously motivated,” Majed Moughni, the woman’s attorney, told CBS News. “There were five people in the lobby and my client was the only one who wore the hijab.”
According to Moughni, the hospital was very well aware of Deliz medical condition, but they still chose to discharge him instead of treating him. He has bipolar disorder and was also a schizophrenic, he escaped a group home without taking the medication.
Beaumont stated that its staff acted like they were supposed to during the whole incident.
“Beaumont security personnel responded immediately and took action to protect the patient and others in the emergency room,” the hospital said in a statement to The Detroit News.
The reason the hijabi was at the hospital was for a slip and fall accident, according to her suit.
Meanwhile, Deliz was walking around in hallway asking people for cigarettes, said the police official.
“She’ll never probably be the same person again. She’s emotionally distressed,” Moughni told The Detroit News. “She’s always looking behind her to make sure she’s not going to get attacked again.”
Deliz is currently in the police custody, and he is awaiting his next court appearance in May.
