This was quite a bold move to drink poison while standing in the court as a protest to declare himself innocent. Our viewers might think that this is a situation which happens in films mostly where the hero drinks poison to prove a point but it actually happened and a war criminal drank poison during a court hearing only to prove his point.
Slobodan Praljak took poison after the judge announced a 20-year sentence for him at the UN war crimes tribunal. The dude died after taking the poison in a failed attempt to escort him to the hospital before his death. Dutch police is however not giving their comments on the TV report which declared the Gen. Slobodan dead.
A spokesman for the tribunal which was hearing the appeal case said, “I have no information to share at this point.” During a court hearing, Praljak, 72yo, drank poison from a bottle shortly after the judges declared him guilty and gave a 20-year sentence. Almost every famous TV channel was present there and the dude drank poison in front of everyone.
The judges had confirmed his involvement in a campaign to drive Muslims out of a would-be Bosnian Croat mini-state in Bosnia in the early 1990s. The international criminal tribunal has invited local police officers to investigate the matter. The provision of poison in a high-security area to Gen. Slobodan is still a mystery.
A spokesperson for the war crimes court said, as reported by the guardian, “An independent investigation is ongoing which has been initiated by the Dutch authorities at the request of the ICTY. We will cooperate fully.”
