A few people who are against the consumption of meat are called as vegans. Almost everyone knows this but what people don’t know is the latest restraining order sought against vegans by a Whole Foods store in Berkeley. This suit was filed by the store against the Direct Action Everywhere (DxE) protesters.
The issuance of restraining orders against DxE will not allow them to enter the store. This vegan activists group is well known for protesting outside Telegraph Ave. Whole Foods. They also protested against the Bay Area supermarkets in a bid to raise awareness about the vegan diet. These protests are being conducted since many years to divert some attention of the shops towards the alleged animal welfare violations.
DxE members have repeatedly entered our stores and property to conduct demonstrations that disrupt customers and team members by blocking access to our aisles, departments and cash registers, interfering with our business and putting the safety of both customers and team members at risk. (said a spokesperson of the whole foods store in an interview to The Guardian)
The vegan group launched this campaign against the main suppliers of the Whole Foods i-e Pitman Family Farms. The group alleged that the farm violated its adherence to free-range environments for its chickens. The DxE group alleged that once they paid the visit to the farm they realised that not a single chicken was roaming free. Later, in response to the allegations, the farm released a video showing the chickens intermingling with each other in different activities.
DxE had also protested Turkey sales at the same Whole Foods store in Berkley. In addition to this protest, last summer the group gave an ultimatum to a butcher shop, they asked the shop to hang the animal rights sign in the window or to face group protest outside.
The DxE group is also alleged to disrupt the dinner services at an eatery in Berkley. One of the activists of the group covered herself in animal feces outside a San Francisco Trader Joe’s. Because of the increasing skirmishes and the past history, the Whole Food’s Store decided to get a restraining order as the behaviour vegan protesters was causing decline in their sales.
