Paris Mayer Anne Hidalgo demanded to ban black feminist festival, scheduled to happen in the capital, saying “it was prohibited to white people”. She thinks this promotes racism and is against the rights of white people.
Nyansapo means knot of wisdom, ingenuity and intelligence. Nyansapo’s first edition scheduled from 28th to 30th July at a cultural centre in Paris. More than 80% space is reserved for black women (says the official website) to discuss the political agenda and resisting as a feminist. Another small part is reserved for everyone, while the remaining part reserved for black people only without gender discrimination. The English version of this website doesn’t use word “non-mixed” instead uses “reserved”.
Anne Hidalgo said on Twitter that she firmly condemns organisations of this sort as these prohibit white people and spread racism. She demanded to ban such organisations so that solidarity between races may be confirmed.
She said that she wants the festival to be banned, further, she added that she also reserves right to prosecute organisers on charges of discrimination.
Police released a statement that they hadn’t been advised by Sunday evening about the event however they will ensure that the laws, values and principle of the republic are followed.
French anti-racism and anti-semitism movements have strongly condemned the event.
Wallerand de Saint-Just, the regional head of Marine Le Pen’s National Front party had earlier challenged Hidalgo to give an explanation of the event. His major concern was the scheduled happening of the event and Paris governance stand in this regard, that how such an event could be in accordance with laws and values of France.
The cultural centre La Generale where the event was hosted, released a statement:
We are saddened to see certain antiracist associations letting themselves be manipulated like this!
