Older people are replacing teenagers as fast food workers across America

Written by Logical Men

Working culture can go through some changes in a century or two, however in current times these changes are more fast paced. All thanks to the advent of new ways to earn money and constant innovation in the scientific field. Fast Food is one thing which has become an important part of the lives of many Americans. A bread along with a chicken piece is often the only option left to feed themselves, as is the case in a fast moving life style. Recently, there was seen a trend in the employees of the fast food chains, previously teenagers used to work at the counters, now more old age workers are seen and observed.

As a teenager often kids loved to work at fast food restaurant, believing that they would be able to get their hands on a burger or two. Also the manager is often kind enough to offer extra goodies which are left at the end of the work day. However, a recent report by the Bloomberg shows that the teenagers might not be interested anymore in working at the fast foo outlets. Recruiters have said that the older workers have better manners and they are good with schedule. These two things are often lacking in the younger counterparts.

Bloomberg has reported that restaurants were often found placing a bar on the people who could apply for the job, like asking only those Americans to apply who are over 50. They were found to be recruiting senior citizens. This shift in hiring can be blamed on two trends, one is the labour shortage while the old one is the tightness of job market in five decades. Also, there is an increasing tendency of the old age Americans to keep working despite getting to the retirement age.

According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, the number of Americans who work aged 65 years to 74 years is expected to grow 4.5 pc between the year 2014 and 2024, while those aged 16 to 24 is expected to shrink by 1.4 pc. (as reported by Unilad)
