A mother that lives in Colorado took matters into her own hands when she traveled to Mexico to help capture a man accused of molesting her son.
The man was released on bail, which allowed him to flee the country.
Lydia Lerma, who resides in Fort Collins, went to Mexico to find Andrew Vanderwal, 27, who was accused of molesting her child. He is currently being held in the Larimer County Jail on charges of sexual assault.
Lerma posted an emotional video on Facebook in May 2017 title ‘Catch A Pedophile’, in which she shared her disappointment in the law enforcement which failed to catch the culprit at that time.
Vanderwal’s car was found abandoned at US-Mexico border in El Paso, Texas.
She said she was never notified and was told to back off of the investigation.
She added, They “basically told me to cool my jets and let them do their job,” she said in the video. “I was doing what any mother would do.”
Vanderwal was a roommate with her ex-husband which gave him access to their child. He used to pick up the 12-year-old daughter and 6-year-old son from school and looked after them when his roommate was at work.
Vanderwal used to buy him things, one time he bought him a $250 bike and Nike sneakers, they were both very close.
He was reported in October 2016, by Lerma’s ex-husband for molesting the boy, later Vanderwal confessed on a phone call that was recorded by the police.
He was arrested after that but was released on a bond provided by his parents. She was very angry when she found out about Vanderwal’s abandoned car.
Upon realization that the criminal might be gone away forever, she decided to catch him on her own.
She used social media to find him, she coordinated with FBI after locating him which led to his arrest.
He is now being held on $750,00 bound and if he is released he will have to wear GPS tracking device.
