Harvard & MIT researchers have made this smart ink tattoo, diagnoses diabetes & dehydration realtime

Smart tattoos are the future now which can give you swag and diagnosis of health-related issues in real-time. So these MIT and Harvard researchers have developed a smart ink tattoo. This tattoo is capable of checking real-time sugar level and dehydration. It can tell if the athlete is dehydrated or a diabetic.

The project was started as a way to overcome the limits currently offered by the biomedical devices. The work was conducted by two postdoctoral fellows at Harvard Medical School. It was led by Katia Vega at MIT’s Media Lab. They paired the bio-sensitive inks to form a new device.

In an interview, they said, “We were thinking, new technologies, what is the next generation after wearables?” The interview is reported on the official Harvard news website. “So, we came up with the idea that we could incorporate biosensors in the skin.

The current body wearable devices can’t integrate perfectly with the body. These devices also need a source of power and some wireless interface to conduct the data. These bio-inks tattoos actually change colour to tell the state of the body from inside. Just like PH papers these tattoos can tell the sugar level and other important parameters of the body. The researchers wanted to go beyond what is available today as technology.

One of the group members shared his concern that more work is needed to make this a complete product. The ink shouldn’t fade or diffuse into the surrounding tissue.
