People most likely to commit suicide after the release of a Netflix series, ’13 reasons why’, says a report. The google search ‘how to commit suicide’ has increased 26% and this increase in search happened soon after the release of this series which feature the suicide attempt of a teenage girl.
The report is based on a study which is to determine the effects of the show on human psychology. The show received much praise for showing the real events leading to suicide. There is quite a well-established link between the suicidal thoughts and suicide attempts.
Psychiatrists have expressed grave concerns, because the show ignores the World Health Organization’s validated media guidelines for preventing suicide, coauthor on the study John Ayers told media!
WHO’s policy actually discourages content production which centres around suicide. There can be many people who might be thinking to give up on life, trying to take an exit. Such shows actually help them motivate. The life is about the struggle but a small push by such shows actually diminish the hope of living.
The data was taken from the google and researchers excluded the data containing terms squad as this might refer to “Suicide Squad”, a popular movie. A cut off date was also used to exclude the search terms related to the suicide of a former NFL player, ‘Aaron Hernandez’.
This is just a study taken with virtues of big data. Big data can be useful in prediction behaviours and this study can be quite accurate too in many ways. Our advice, don’t ignore people, keep in touch and care for your loved ones. Peace!
