A History of Kim Kardashian at the Met Gala: Her Outfits Through the Years

Kim Kardashian’s appearances at the Met Gala have stirred reactions ranging from mockery to admiration. Each year, her outfit reflects the theme in some way—sometimes literally, sometimes not. Here’s a look at how her Met Gala fashion has evolved since her debut.

2013: The Debut in Givenchy

Kim Kardashian made her Met Gala debut in 2013 while pregnant, wearing a rose-printed Givenchy gown designed by Riccardo Tisci. The dress came with built-in gloves and matching heels. The theme was “Punk: Chaos to Couture,” but her floral look didn’t sit well with fans. Many compared the outfit to a couch, and even Robin Williams joked about the resemblance to Mrs. Doubtfire.

Kardashian later told Vogue she cried on the way home. “I just couldn’t believe it,” she said, reflecting on the harsh memes and comments.

2014: A Classic Turn with Lanvin

For the 2014 gala, themed “Charles James: Beyond Fashion,” Kardashian shifted gears. She wore a blue-and-black gown by Lanvin, a more traditional and elegant look. On her now-defunct website, she revealed the original version of the dress was supposed to be gold with metallic leather, but it was changed to blue satin at the last minute.

“Working with Alber Elbaz for my custom gown in 2014 was SUCH a pleasure,” she wrote.

2015: Feathers and Sheer Glamour by Roberto Cavalli

The 2015 theme, “China: Through the Looking Glass,” saw Kardashian wearing a sheer Roberto Cavalli gown designed by Peter Dundas. The dress featured feathers, crystals, and a barely-there silhouette that grabbed headlines.

She later said it was one of her favorite dresses ever. The look was inspired by Cher’s iconic 1974 Met Gala outfit, which also featured a sheer, body-hugging style.
