Mia Threapleton, daughter of Oscar winner Kate Winslet, says she’s determined to build a career in acting on her own terms—without leaning on her mother’s fame.
Speaking to The Sunday Times, the 23-year-old opened up about her early interest in the craft and how she approached the industry with caution. “I remember [my mom] being quite caught off-guard, going, ‘Oh, really?’” she recalled, referring to the moment she first shared her ambitions.

Threapleton said her interest in acting began at age 10. By 15, she was signing up for online casting boards, looking for roles without any public mention of her famous last name. “I wanted to do that on my own,” she said.
Asked about the role nepotism plays in her journey, she responded, “I don’t really know how to answer that, to be honest. I mean, you can’t choose your parents.”

Winslet offered advice early on—“Read the damn script as many times as you can”—but Mia insists her mother encouraged independence. “She was very, very encouraging of me doing it on my own and for myself, having the experiences be mine and mine alone,” she said.
Still, the message at home was clear: hard work comes first. “She always—always—emphasized the effort that needs to go into it.”
Threapleton has already started carving out her own path with roles in projects like I Am Ruth, and she appears set on building a career that reflects her own choices—not just her family legacy.
