2014 has been a great year for Science fiction movies. Science fiction movies dominated the cinema, with eyeball-hogging visuals combined with good stories capturing the audience’s imagination. The sci fi movies 2014 have done a brilliant job of elegantly imitating our economic, social and cultural problems than this genre’s movies have not been able to do for so many years now. There was a lot of focus on other important issues as well, both present and future wise.
All in all, these movies are getting smarter and there is a wide range of material being deployed in science fiction movies now, not just future robot/alien action trope that had became a staple for so many years.
Below are our top sci fi movies 2014.
Director: Christopher Nolan
Starring: Matthew McConaughey, Wes Bentley, Jessica Chastain, Anne Hathaway
This is no1 of our sci fi movies 2014. Interstellar has been the most talked about science fiction movie of 2014. The movies stars McConaughey as the lead astronaut leads other group of explorers through a newly discovered worm hole to find a new home for themselves after Earth has been ravaged by draught and sand storms. Set decades into the future, society is on the brink of collapse and humans are barely living on. In an excellent opening, it is told that this Earth now needs more farmers than engineers and scientists. Our lead finds a group of scientists who are have discovered a new wormhole that opened near Jupiter and are giving it a last ditch effort to find a new home for humanity.
Often through the movie, plot is complex and twisting, with low noise issues also adding to it but the movie’s beautiful cinematography, which be honest 99% of the viewers went for anyway, is astounding and makes up for any other lacking. The film is directed by the brilliant Christopher Nolan and also includes an excellent support cast in the form of Jessica Chastain, Wes Bentley, Michael Caine and Matt Damon among others. All of Christopher Nolan’s blockbusters have been a hit so far and whenever he is directing a movie, you get that tingling feeling in your stomach that you are in for a treat.
This movie is best enjoyed in the biggest screen Cinema you can afford. Happy viewing everybody.
2) Edge Of Tomorrow
Director: Doug Liman

This is no2 of our sci fi movies 2014. This movie has Tom Cruise as a futuristic soldier in futuristic body armor, fighting for the United Defense Force against an enigmatic alien, called Mimic that have been waging a relentless siege on Earth. He teams up with a special forces soldier (played by Emily Blunt, she is a decorated war hero who turns out to have been caught in the same time loop as Tom Cruise’s character), who trains him to be a better soldier. Together they must keep on repeating until they can perfect a plan to save the Earth, in what is already a war lost before even beginning. The movie is adopted from Japanese novel “All you need is Kill). This is a similar Sci-Fi as Bill Murray’s ‘Groundhog Day’ or Jake Gyllenhaal’s ‘Source Code’ and a bit of ‘Starship Troopers’. Tom Cruise’s last year Sci-Fi effort ‘Oblivion’ was a fun watch, so expect a sold, committed performance here as well.
Directors: Peter Spierig , Michael Spierig
Starring: Ethan Hawke, Sarah Snook, Noah Taylor
This is no3 of our sci fi movies 2014. Ethan Hawke stars as a time-travelling detective, whose job is to stop bad events/crimes before they occur. There is one criminal who always has eluded him and very nearly kills him at the start of the film. To catch this illusive killer, he employs a young writer with an amazing past. The movie is actually based on ‘All you Zombies’, a short story by Robert Heinlein in 1958. The movie is closely similar to ‘Looper’ but the plot is much better, aggressive and thrilling. There are good amount of twists that will keep you glued till the end plus the acting from Sarah Snook demands a special mention as well. Ethan Hawke is back with the same team he made the excellent ‘Daybreakers’ with and if you liked the way that movie was executed, you are surely going to like this one
Director: Bong Joon-ho
Starring: Chris Evans, Tilda Swinton, Ed Harris, Jamie Bell, John Hurt
This is no4 of our sci fi movies 2014. The year is AD 2031, a failed experiment to inhibit global warming leads to a horrific ice age that kills off all life on Earth as we know it, well all except the inhabitants of a globetrotting perpetual engine train known as the ‘Snowpiercer’. During many years, a class system has arisen on the train, with the rich living in comfy front end trailers while the poor dwindle on the backside of the train. Starvation and misery starts leading to a revolution. The movie is based on a French novel (graphic) ‘La Tranperceneige’ and the director of the movie, a Korean, is doing his first English one. Still the movie has great reviews and a lot of praise and you should definitely see this one.
5) The Zero Theorem
Director: Terry Gilliam
Starring: Christoph Waltz, Matt Damon, Mélanie Thierry, Tilda Swinton, David Thewlis
This is no5 of our sci fi movies 2014. The movie stars Waltz as a computer genius, suffering from existential torment. He comes under the employment of a shady figure, known only as “Management” to solve the “Zero Theorem”; a formula that can finally find out if life carries any meaning. He has taken a burnt-out chapel as his home and works from there, all the while getting interrupted by visits from a seductive woman and son of Management. The movie follow themes of a garish cartoony near future which is a world full of humor and madness. Reviews might not be that great for this film but with a few over the top performances and Director Gilliam’s trademark style, it will soon get a cult following.
